Your new role
The Senior Estates Engineer reports to the Engineering Manager and supports the Engineering Supervisor for day-to-day operations, this role has responsibility for the reliable and compliant operation of the site wide Building and Utility Services and equipment serving all areas of the European Knowledge Centre (EKC) facility at Hatfield.
The main purpose of this role is to oversee the maintenance and repair activities of mechanical and electrical equipment within a pharmaceutical Manufacturing, Research and commercial facilities at the EKC. This includes managing a team of engineers, ensuring compliance with GMP standards, works completion SLA’s, regulations, company procedures and practices and optimising maintenance processes.
- Support the execution, supervision and coordination of the activities of the utility engineering team and specialist support sub-contractor SME’s, including scheduling work assignments, prioritising tasks, and providing guidance as required in accordance with the CMMS systems for all planned maintenance, reactive and corrective tasks.
- Act as a primary contact surrounding HVAC and business critical infrastructure.
- Conduct regular inspections and audits to assess equipment condition, identify areas for improvement, and implement corrective actions.
- Review BMS / HVCA control systems for optimal plant performance and energy saving opportunities.
- Monitor equipment performance and maintenance activities to ensure adherence to maintenance schedules and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Act as Approved Person (Electrical HV/LV and / or Mechanical Pressure Systems).
- Support Fault finding / analysis and issue resolution when applicable.
- Manage / Supervise project / small works activities
- Plan, communicate and collaborate with key business stakeholders to plan and execute maintenance shutdowns, equipment upgrades, and installations.
- Review and approve maintenance procedures, work permits, and documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness in accordance with GMP and regulatory requirements.
- Support the development and implementation of training programs for engineering staff to enhance skills and knowledge in maintenance techniques, safety procedures, and regulatory compliance.
- Supervise and be responsible for external contractors and vendors, overseeing their work and ensuring compliance with site policies and procedures.
- Prepare reports and presentations for management for incidents, deviations, equipment performance, maintenance activities, and staff utilisation.
- Ensure documentation and data is completed to statutory, H&S and GxP standards.
- Support the continuous improvement activities within area of responsibility
- Assess / recommend asset critical spares requirements, reviewing supply and storage needs.
- Be part of on call (1 week in 6), for absences to cover holiday and sickness, as required.
What are we looking for?
Essential:
- Proven experience in supervising a team of engineers or technicians.
- Engineering
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings, schematics, and manuals.
- Updating and reviewing of Risks assessments
- Contract management to ensure maintenance activities are undertaken according to correct procedures.
- In-depth knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, maintenance practices, and regulatory requirements.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and develop team members.
- Experience using computerise maintenance management systems (CMMS) for the purpose of raising corrective work orders and locating spares.
- Need to be flexible, as occasionally the need will arise to work outside standard office hours
- Educated to ‘A’ level standard/ONC/HNC/ City & Guilds standards.
- Relevant technical qualification in mechanical or electrical engineering.
- Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
- Previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role within a pharmaceutical or GMP environment.
Desirable:
- Experience with budget management and cost control.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Previous experience working in a GMP or highly regulated industry.
